Music Therapy

Music therapy is an established clinical intervention, regulated by the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC) in the UK.

Relational experiences are central to children’s development. However, it is often the case that the children who are most in need of these experiences find them the most difficult to access. In the medium of music, however, relational experiences can become more possible for these children. Through musical collaboration, children can develop their awareness of themselves and those around them, encouraging social interaction and improving mental health.

In music therapy, children can engage with music however they wish. Some children choose to sing or play instruments, others rap or dance! By focusing on what children can do, rather than what they can’t, music therapy can build self-esteem and support social and emotional development.

Our music therapist, Henry, is a musician with ten years of experience of working with young people and other vulnerable groups. He began working at Springwell North as a music therapy trainee, and such was the impact of the provision that he is now employed across our trust.
