At Springwell Leeds Academy, we recognise the link between good attendance, a pupil’s attainment and their developing SEMH skills. We therefore expect all students to attend school regularly and on time. Pupils are recognised and rewarded for both excellent and improved attendance.
Our Academy encourages regular and punctual attendance by:
– Providing a warm and welcoming learning environment, beginning with Nurture Breakfast
– Meeting and greeting students on arrival
– Responding promptly to a child’s and/or parent’s concerns relating to events in school
– Displaying and discussing weekly attendance statistics
– Monitoring pupil attendance and informing parents/carers in writing of irregular attendance
– Setting challenging, yet realistic, targets for individual students
If your child is absent due to illness, or for any other valid reason, please contact the school office on the first day of absence.
We encourage parents to make medical and dental appointments in the school holidays wherever possible, or out of school hours. However, we realise that CAMHS appointments and diagnostic appointments are likely to impact attendance, because they are inflexible, of significant length, and often take an emotional toll on pupils. We recognise the essential nature of these appointments for our pupils.
As parents/cares we expect that you will:
– Always encourage regular school attendance and be aware of your legal responsibilities
– Always ensure that your child arrives at school punctually and ready for the school day
– Ensure that you contact school whenever your child is unwell and unable to attend school
– Contact the school by 8:45am on the first day of the child’s absence and telephone every day thereafter
When a pupil does not attend school you can expect us to call home that morning; please support staff by calling in advance, or being ready to take the call. We may follow up with a home visit as required.
If attendance continues to decline or be of concern, we may involve agencies such as Children’s Social Work Services or the Attendance Service to advise and support.
Punctuality:
Pupils must arrive by 8:45 each morning. Learning starts at 9am in the form of Nurture Breakfast, a key SEMH curriculum aspect of our day. If pupils arrive at school after the close of the register, a late mark will be recorded.
